Remember how much Emmie hated taking a bath in China? Luckily she changed her opinion about bath time quite quickly upon our arrival home. Nowadays if we even mention that we are going to take a bath she runs to the stairs saying, "Bath? Bath?" (actually more like, "Ba? Ba?") She'll even take off her shoes and socks if she thinks it will get her parents moving quicker.
Here are a few before and after photos. The "before" photos are from June, and Emmie is still wearing her red thread bracelets that she was wearing the day we met her. The "after" photos show Em with her cute towel with hoodie made by our wonderful neighbor, Jenny.
After putting in the pictures I can't believe how different she looks! Seven months have passed and she has grown up so much. Where did our baby go?
Em is officially 20 months old! Twenty months and 4 days. We had a check-up today with her pediatrician. She's right on track, and actually quite ahead of where she needs to be. She is in the 75% for both weight and height on the American charts! She of course needed to get FOUR shots so that we are up to date on vaccinations. Two in each leg. Ouch. She only cried about 30 seconds though, because soon after the doctor gave her a sucker.
At home we have seen amazing learning. She is putting two words together and expressing herself quite well. She is obsessed about pointing out what things belong to her and tells us minute by minute (literally) things that belong to "Emmie". The following is a conversation we had after the doctor visit today.
Scene: Marshall's, Em in a cart eating her sucker, me pushing the cart
Em: Emmie...Emmie...dis!(pointing to her sucker, calling it 'this' because she can't say sucker I guess) Me: Yeah, Emmie has a sucker doesn't she. Em: Mommy? Mommy? (points to my purse where there is another sucker from the doc.) Me: You want mommy to eat the sucker? Em: uh-huh (shaking her head yes) Me: (opening sucker) Yummmm! Em: (excited that I'm enjoying the sucker as much as she is)Mommy...Emmie...dis! Mommy...Emmie...dis! Emmie...Mommy(..on & on!) Me: Yep, you got a sucker and mama got a sucker too. Em: mommy...lellow? (Pointing to my yellow sucker) Me: Yeah, mommy's sucker is yellow. Em: Mommy...lellow...Emmie...mommy...lellow...(on & on, trust me!)
Soon enough I bite my sucker and show her that it's almost gone. Em: mommy...lellow...bye-bye? Me: Yep, I ate my sucker. Em: lellow...byebye...lellow...byebye (as she waves to my sucker stick and I set it on the shelf because I can't find a garbage. Oops, did I just admit that?)
The funny thing is that this is pretty much how our days sound. Most conversations contains lots of "Emmie...Emmie" or "Mah-mee? Mah-mee? Dah-dee? Dah-dee?"
I'm pretty sure that there aren't many things cuter than watching your child learn how to speak. It's amazing to watch them make connections. I keep trying to get some of it on video to share, but she's so camera defiant shy that I can't seem to do it. Maybe another day I'll have some video to share.
